Lots of interesting shows … scattered across the dial

What's noteworthy about this list of potentially cool shows is how the vast majority of them aren't on major networks, and a significant number aren't on basic cable channels, either. Which is both nifty (lots of venues to grow lots of cool shows) and irksome (so I have to subscribe to HBO and Showtime and Netflix and Amazon TV and have a Playstation?).

  1. Coke and Popcorn can help ease the pain of of subscriptions. It's how I watch Game of Thrones without having to deal with the rest of HBOs non-interesting stuff. http://www.cokeandpopcorn.ch/tvsection.php

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm dangerously close to getting burned out smallscreen superheroes. Jessica Jones? Even when you add in Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and the Defenders, how many non-comic book people know these names?

Agents of SHIELD lost me early. Peggy Carter is surprisingly good. I love Flash and Arrow and Constantine, but Jessica Jones and Daredevil do nothing for me. Possibly a personal bias, though. I never read Jessica Jones and lost interest in Daredevil.

I have such high hopes for Westworld, iZombie, and Powers. The trailer for Last Man on Earth showed me how boring the apocalypse might be if I'm not running from zombies. 12 Monkeys is off to a decent start.

CSI: Cyber could be interesting. I loved Blake Crouch's Wayward Pines book series but the trailer for the show filled me with meh.

Jekyll and Hyde? Hmmm. Never heard of that one but could be interesting. Is it modern times or a period piece? Guessing modern since it's the grandson. They could've probably got the Penny Dreadful crowd if they kept it set back then.

The pic used for Sense8 is cruel. Martha with the TARDIS? Damn! Thought there was about to be a Doctor Who spin-off. 😛

  2. +Marty Shaw I agree that there's a danger of burn-out in the general category of super-heroes. On the other hand, we had a decade or two of Westerns on TV that people seemed to enjoy, so who knows. I think there are enough variations on the theme to kep it fresh.

There's certainly also a danger with non-big-name characters (though Marvel managed that with GotG), but also some advantages. People know Spider-Man; they've already decided if they like the character or not. Give them an unknown with a good hook, and you can reel them in.

So that's the direction to push "Jessica Jones" — which was, in its comic book title Alias (which name they can clearly not use), a really enjoyable book, and has a hook that can pull folk in as something different.

"Agents of SHIELD" started to improve mid-S1, and post Winter Solder suddenly became exciting. I'm enjoying it this season — but I'm also enjoying "Agent Carter" a lot, and hate to think of it wrapping up soon.

Luke Cage could have some possibilities, esp. with the race angle. Iron Fist is more problematic, but if they can get the partnership between the two of them working, it would offer something different.

Daredevil is tough. Some fabulous comics out there, and some mediocre ones, but a lot of it depends on how well they get into Matt Murdock's head.

I seriously want to see Powers, but it will almost certainly have to wait for some alternate media release as I don't have (and don't want) a PlayStation.

Never got into iZombie. Westworld may have some potential, depending on the direction they take it.

Anything CSI-related is DOA as far as I'm concerned.

Jeckyll and Hyde is set, I believe, in the 1930s, so some different period piece twists are available.

"Sense8" I'm conflicted on. On the one hand, JMS writing. On the I am not a Freema Agyeman fan (beyond just "Doctor Who").
