Stephenson was a widely-used voice artist for Hanna-Barbera during their golden years. In addition to Mr. Slate on The Flintstones, he was also the (first) voice of Dr. Benton Quest on Jonny Quest, and a ton of voices on Scooby-Doo — and, heck, on about every other cartoon series ever done up until a decade ago.

I am saddened.
I remember seeing him on The Beverly Hillbillies. "I know that voice! Who is that???"
It was somehow harder to recognize his voice when I could actually see him. But he'll always be Dr. Quest to me.
