"Is the American flag next?"

Um … no. That seems unlikely. Unlike the Confederate battle flag, the American flag is, actually, our national flag.

Mind you, Americans have a fetish about the stars and stripes that could probably bear with some moderation. But there's a significant difference between the social ostracizing of the battle flag of a defeated set of racist rebels, resurrected 80-100 years later as a big middle finger to the rest of the country, and how we look upon the flag of our nation.

  1. To me, that flag is nothing more than a cool paintjob on the General Lee, but I honestly wish people wouldn't get so butt-hurt over every little thing. Could the national flag be next? I don't think it will be but I bet it could be.

I think it's safe to say if a group got loud enough and got enough media attention, the stars and stripes would be on the chopping block right beside the stars and bars. All it would take is to come up with some angle on how it insults or oppresses people.

At some point, freedom of speech became 'My opinion over-rules yours and what I say goes because majority rules.'

  2. Marty Shaw, you see no difference between the two flags that might make a difference in the outcomes? Since it’s amply documented that the Confederate flag is the flag of a revolt in defense of slavery, what does that tell us about your view of the USA?

  3. +Marty Shaw I see where you're coming from on this — the "freedom to get cranky about stuff" seems to have grown by leaps and bounds (and knows no political boundaries). That said, I think the two cases are profoundly different, and the national flag is in no particular danger.

Also, the Confederate battle standard isn't actually going anywhere. It will become a more personal item, though, rather than a state-sponsored symbol. Which strikes me as appropriate.

  4. Conservatives seem to view criticism about expression as arbitrary rules, mere tribalism. That there are actual reasons, people, behind the objectives never shows up on their radar.
