I can't say I applaud the particular motivations / theology behind these clerks who resigned their positions rather than issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples, but I do applaud their willingness to resign for their beliefs rather than wheedle for an exception from the law.

It's akin to civil disobedience — it doesn't have any moral impact if the disobeyer isn't willing to take the consequences of their conscience-driven action.
I respect them. I think they are wrong, but moral positions are rarely universally held. They are prepared not to compromise themselves.
