To be fair, we don't know how the question was actually couched to him. Or necessarily what he meant by it. For example, Rorschach is a very interesting character, and watching him and his mania through Watchmen (movie or, preferably, graphic novel) plot is fascinating, if creepy. When it comes to memorable comic book protagonists (neither "hero" nor "super" apply very well), Rorschach certainly fits the bill.
On the other hand, it could be that Cruz just sees the iconoclasm, the convictions the dedication, the martyrdom, the Right-wing Talk Radio muttering, and the take-no-prisoners attitude, and thinks they're fun and inspirational. Which, unlike so many of these candidate fluff pieces, would actually tell you something about the man.
