Here's a 1952 reading by J R R Tolkien of Bilbo and Gollumn riddling each other in The Hobbit, recorded by a friend with a portable tape recorder. It's sort of fascinating hearing the voices and rhythms Tolkien chose for his own creation.
Tolkien Reads from The Hobbit in Rare Archival Audio from His First Encounter with a Tape Recorder
“He was Gollum — as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes.”J.R.R. Tolkien (January 3, 1892–September 2, 1973) firm
What an incredible voice. I loved his Gollum voice. Such fun to listen to.
Sounds pretty much exactly how I expected him to.
+Anthony James Doesn't he, though? If he had sounded any different…well, I would have been very disappointed. He has the scholarly, wise old Brit voice that I love so much. It's all so proper! Indeed!
According to lore, before he used the tape recorder, he recited the Lord's Prayer in Gothic, as a blessing. I think it is mentioned in one of the various biographies, from memory.
I'd like to hear his NAKED LUNCH – I'm sure he'd do wonders with it….
