On the first season of "Killjoys"

I couldn't possibly wax as lyrical over the show as the author below, but it's been a fun family regular during its first short season. The characters are enjoyable, particularly in their relationships; there are plenty of secrets to delve into, but everything isn't centered on that; there's sex, and violence, and action, and spaceship goodness; and there's some very interesting worldbuilding.

The main two critiques of the show I'd have are: (1) a tech level that seems to be all over the place, especially when it's convenient to (thinking of two necklaces in two different episodes that turned out to be a heck of a lot more interesting than any of the other tech we've seen), and (2) along those same lines, a lot of deus ex convenient just-introduced plot points that could have worked a lot better if established earlier on. (My suspicion is that the short season played a role in this latter element.)

That said, having spent a season building up how the world of the Quad works, the writers have no problems with a final episode that thoroughly upsets some major apple carts, in ways that actually make sense. That is good, confident plotting: firmly establishing the status quo before upending it. Too many shows (and books) don't have the patience for it, and more power to Killjoys for doing so.

There's not been a 2nd Season pickup yet, though (sigh) _Dark Matter) has one announced. Here's hoping Syfy doesn't let a good thing go.
