Because, yes, of course we want people opening fire on anyone who seems to be committing any sort of crime. An armed society is a polite society! If we let shoplifters get away with it, the terrorists win!

This is why we can't have nice things.
Now, why when a police man shoots an individual for a petty non-life threatening situation do we not shake our heads in the shame we have about this woman. Maybe it's because we let people like this woman off with out any charges whatsoever.
Now just imagine if even more people were armed: they see her pull out a gun, conclude rightly that she's a crazy person committing mass murder, so they pull out guns and shoot her, and people around them, seeing that, pull out guns and shoot them, and so forth. This is the NRA's idea of a polite society.
And if we can just trigger that chain at one major NRA convention…
