This particular scene was what locked in the original Star Wars movie for me. I mean, sure, obvious optical effect, but it lent a particularly neat air to the whole desert setting, complete with John Williams' swelling music and Mark Hamill's oh-so-young face.

Dave, you probably already know this, but I'll go ahead for those who don't.
Williams originally scored the scene with Luke's theme (what we think of as the Star Wars theme). He felt it didn't work, so he changed it to Ben's theme. I think we can all agree he made the right choice (especially given that Ben's theme was renamed "the Force theme" by the next movie).
