"… or Musical".
I … I … I'm gobsmacked.
Also, Matt Damon won the GG for Best Actor … in a Comedy or Musical.

That's just …
I mean, yeah, it had some funny lines. Really funny lines. But I would never in a million years (or 140 million miles) call it a comedy.
Not surprisingly there's been been a bit of conversation about it, both this year and over the years, e.g., http://www.slashfilm.com/wtf-the-martian-golden-globes-comedy/, https://thedissolve.com/features/honorable-mentions/329-the-golden-globes-definition-of-comedy-tests-the-l/, and http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/la-et-mn-golden-globes-preview-20160108-story.html
Apparently the category a movie is submitted under is determined by the studio. And there's some thought that since comedy is a less-competitive category, studios are happy to toss films in there to increase their chances of getting an award. Even though that movies that really do intend to make people laugh as their purpose therefore get swamped. Not to mention musicals.
Granted, the boundary between "comedy" and "drama" can get fuzzy at times. Maybe that means that such a category split is meaningless (or, in turn, maybe it means that the preference for awarding dramas with the highest kudos means that having a comedy category rightfully recognizes actual comedies).
Regardless calling The Martian a "comedy" (assuming one isn't considering it a "musical") just strikes me as bizarre. The HFPA rules (http://www.goldenglobes.com/sites/default/files/media/golden_globe_awards_eligibility_descriptions_0.pdf) don't really define what "comedy" or "drama" are. Maybe that explains why what they end up getting so often seems to be both, or neither, but certainly not clearly what most people would consider a fit for the category.

Comedy?
Well… it was funny…
This is similar to when Jethro Tull won a Grammy for best Hard Rock performance in 1988…
The category has always struck me as odd. Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy? So… a comedy (or musical) on the big screen isn't a motion picture? Why don't they just say Best Motion Picture and call it a day?
+Marty Shaw The distinction is being made vs. Best Motion Picture, Animated; Foreign Language; Drama. All of those are actually considered motion pictures by the HFPA.
However, the categories (esp. Drama and Comedy/Musical) are more than a bit arbitrary, esp. since they aren't actually defined.
