Amazing what happens when you don't continuously threaten to bomb someone

Not to say we're bestest buddies with Iran, to be perfectly honest, nor that the Iranian government didn't feel they had something to gain in how this was resolved — but it's pretty impressive that what started as A Huge Diplomatic Issue That Demands Immediate Action, By Gum! turned into something very different.

The key seems to be an American president finding ways to talk about Iran without having the word "bomb" or "destroy" in the same sentence. Seems pretty straightforward.

President Obama’s Diplomacy Broke Iran’s Hostage Taking Habit
Iran recently released 10 American sailors, after holding them for mere hours. In 2007, Iran held British sailors for 13 days. What has changed?

  1. What the US public don’t seem to realise is that while the ‘Bomb them’ approach ‘plays well in Peoria’, it makes the US look like, frankly I’m sorry to say, a bunch of dicks. If the world was a Calvin and Hobbes strip, you are Moe, the not very bright bully.

When you tell the US right this, they don’t seem to care – it makes them feel big, so why should they bother about all those lesser countries. Of course, you all then get lumped in with the chickenhawks, and the rest of the planet makes assumptions. The same thing happens with Evolution and the 2nd Amendment: those shouting the loudest are those you really don’t want heard. What is particularly funny is when a British journalist questions a rabid 2nd amendment activist – it invariable ends up with accusations we want to take away your guns so we can invade you again.

Sorry Dave – you seem a really nice guy, but the crazies are making the rest of us point and laugh. A recent attitude poll shows that we do like the US, but maybe you need to show off your better side!
