This really is remarkable. What was originally supposed to be a Superman sequel has completely morphed into a Batman movie (guest starring Wonder Woman). This "final" trailer is almost entirely Bat-focused, and the Man of Steel gets zero lines.
Something is very wrong here.
Batman has always been a more interesting character to write for than Superman, if you ask me. I'm not surprised that the writers are focusing on Mr Wayne. But yeah… given the premise of the movie, this is a little strange.
I think Batman is an easier character to write for than Superman, especially if you're focusing on Tragic Madman Seeking Vengeful Justice for His Childhood Loss bits, coupled with high tech and big punches.
I think one can write very human, very engaging, very interesting stories about Superman (some very good writers have done so at times over the past 80 years or so), but it's more difficult because the stakes are more difficult to manage.
On the other hand, in a populist era where the powerful are seen as a threat, it's not surprising that riffing off Frank Miller's Dark Knight is attractive — even if the hero is part of the 0.01%.
No shot of seeing a Superman return to his socialist roots, I guess.
People have really forgotten what he's about, including many writers. He's not supposed to be simply a physical god. He's supposed to be inspirational because of what he wants to be and the constraints he takes upon himself to do it. If Batman is supposed to be about breaking through corruption and the harm it inflicts on everyone, Superman is supposed to embody what we can be when we refuse to be corrupted.
But no, can't have inspiration in a grim dark world. Well, you can, but only if it comes in the form of an ultra violent and unstable rich guy.
