Today's task was setting up a new PC for the In-Law-'Rents. Their desktop unit was a 2008 Windows Vista machine, an old Compaq, that has been gobsmackingly slow for way, way too long. And, in fact, it was slow enough that it took me about 6 hours to backup up 64Gb of data to a thumb drive.
The new machine is a low-end (but expandable) Dell unit, with Win10, and a Tb hard drive, and loading data from the same thumb drives was running at 4x the sped.
Need to finish the job tomorrow, but at the moment it's a small validation of my 1337 PC Upgrade Skillz, which is kind of nice.

I just voided the warranty on brand new Windows 10 machine by installing Linux but still a great upgrade by comparison. BTW the old machine with a new drive would probable run Linux just dandy. The machine I am using know is 2005 Toshiba Qosimo. works great with Ubuntu 14.04 32 bit.
+Philipp Giddings Yeah … don't really need an additional Linux box.
Also upgraded a windows vista machine to Windows 10 took forever not just a while;) then because the spyware issue wiped it out as well with Mint 17.03, found it was backdoored hacked version then loaded Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit works great
+Dave Hill There never enough Linux boxes until the others have all been assimilated (borglike) LOL
Until Linux runs Call of Duty (and a lot of other games I play), it will not be on my machine. Nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't do what I want.
Better things to do with my life thatn pretend I am a killer in a virtual world
Well, one advantage to what the in-law-rents needed was that the system demands were low. They had only 86Gb of data to transfer, and don't play anything that requires bigger horsepower than Spider solitaire.

+Doug Dunfee Actually, this is a lot easier since they moved to about 10 minutes away. 🙂
