Ditching the headphone jack in new Apple products is an awful idea, for all the reasons listed here. I'm sure it will make Apple money in some fashion, though, and won't hurt its sales, so why shouldn't it?

If the headphone jack is the new floppy drive, what’s the new CD-RW?
I read this article and I have to fully disagree, the 3.5mm jack is dead and shouldn't be used at all, it's hindering music and audio progress.
I haven't used a headphone jack or any other wired connection on any of my recent phones. I could easily live without it.
What I suspect will happen is that they will move to USB-C (with USB-C Digital Audio) and include a barebones USB to 3.5mm adapter with the phone, while selling "premium" headphones which use the USB connector directly.
That will allow them to position the new standard as being better/cooler/more desirable without killing the existing ecosystem immediately. A market for various "better" adapters will also come into being.
I actually do think that this is the right direction for the industry, but I doubt that even Apple will make it happen overnight.
I'm more interested in when (not whether) they'll make the transition from Lightning to USB-C. I think it's inevitable, but it'll be interesting to see whether they do it in the iPhone 7, or wait until the following generation.
+Colm Buckley that's definitely what I'm waiting for also, to see if they make the transition to usb-C
I use that jack to connect my phone to my car, so that I can stream music and play it over my car’s speakers. It’s handy.
+Peter A I'm curious as to what "music and audio progress" it's hindering.
+Dave Hill audio itself is horrible and should have advanced as much as television has but we still use the technology from over 10 years ago. That's why there are apps like tidal with HD music or lg and moto add ons, music is so far behind. That should be standard by now
Square will be pissed?
