The casual mendacity of Donald Trump

It's not that big a thing, to be honest, but it speaks volumes about the mind of Donald Trump.

1. It's not enough for Trump to object to the debate schedule, he has to lie about getting a letter from the NFL complaining about it. Why? Because it makes him look like a big shot, I guess. And if the NFL denies sending a letter? None of his supporters will think a thing about it.

2. It's not enough for Trump to object to the debate schedule. While confessing he has no idea how the schedule is set, he's more than happy to speculate it's all some vast Clintonian conspiracy to somehow magically manipulate the debates against him. And if the dates were actually set by an independent commission close to a year ago, well before the NFL game schedule was set (and independent of it)? None of his supporters will think a thing about it.

It's not just the pettiness, it's the need to lie about it for self-aggrandizing and publicity-grabbing reasons.

Caught in a fib, Trump hedges on debate schedule
After claiming to have a received a letter from the NFL – a letter that does not exist – it’s unclear if Trump will debate Clinton this fall.

  1. Actually very few people seem to know about the separate group that manages the debates until Gary Johnson started opening up about it. If anyone has a right to complain it's him.

  2. +John Bump Aside from the ones who are terrified/hateful about Clinton, I think there's something to what you say. The Trump campaign seems to be about Feels — getting in touch with your anger and frustration, being bold and unrestrained, feeling oppressed and persecuted. Truth, in that context, is very old school, and the more truth involved (the nuances, compromises, and complexity of everyday life), the less satisfying the situation is. It's not about what Is, but what Ought To Be.

  3. I actually have a friend who used to serve on the debate commission. Fascinating at that time. I’m not sure it is quite the same today. I suspect this might be the beginning of the Donald pulling out of debates. Not that his followers will have a problem, but the country will miss out on war might be the only possibility of actual policy discussion. Sigh…
