This is almost quintessentially a #FirstWorldProblem , but I post it only because I'm cursed these lids for years. If you create pressure in the tube by squeezing it to get toothpaste out, it will continue oozing out even afterward, and, since the cap does't close well, you get a mess, either on the counter or inside the lid for the next time you open it.
What this mostly tells me is that Crest executives don't actually use the product, otherwise this would have been solved in 2009, when the new lids were introduced.
(Why don't I just change brands? Because I prefer the Crest flavor, and I know which product has the combo of ingredients / features I want without the ones I don't want. Toothpaste aisles at supermarkets are freaking annoying.)

The mess made me appreciate good toothpaste-tube design.
I had to stop using Crest because I wanted to use a better toothpaste and I'm allergic to their Pro-Health line. Brushing with Pro-Health causes the insides of my mouth to peal. I use Colgate now. Their caps are also easy to open/close with no mess.
