Not so far as I can tell.
The current casualty is the A-10 Warthog. The plane was due to be phased out by a close air support version of the theoretically jack-of-all-trades F-35. Then, as the F-35 program extended out due to widespread technical problems, the Air Force okayed continued deployment of the A-10 for longer.
Except it didn't check to see what support the A-10 would need, and didn't order nearly enough replacement wings as that plane's parts reach end-of-life.
The result, apparently, will be a grounding of up to a third of the A-10s prior to the F-35's CAS version coming online. And that's not something likely to happen any sooner than schedule; in fact, I'd expect that the CAS version of the F-35 will be later than planned, and have a raft of technical problems that need to be worked out in the field.
Air Force may retire a third of active A-10 “Warthogs” for want of replacement wings
110 Warthogs will have to be put to pasture.
There are some Stukas and Mosquitoes available from aircraft restoration societies. Perhaps they can be leased.
Australia has agreed to buy a slew of F-35s. We'll be okay as long as they only deploy to air shows.
+Travis Bird And there are Lockheed pilots to fly them.
'The slow-down in procurement has resulted in a slowing of pilot and crew training for the F-35 as well. In May, the Air Force and Lockheed Martin announced that the Air Force would not fly the F-35 at the Paris Air Show—Lockheed's own pilots will perform a demonstration instead.
"Due to the Air Force's limited number of aircraft, pilots, and maintenance professionals, we have decided not to develop an F-35 demonstration profile for airshows this year," an Air Force spokesperson wrote in an official statement. "While we look forward to demonstrating the unparalleled maneuverability of the F-35 to the world, we remain singularly focused on bringing the full combat capability of the F-35 to our nation."'
+Dave Hill The tone of that spokesperson reminds me of how we were constantly assured of imminent victory in Vietnam. (It was true too. Just not ours.)
…and the squadron is grounded again because 5 pilots suffered hypoxia while flying the F-35 last week.
I'll take one! Lawn ornament. My favourite plane.
