As in, it was lifeless, low-budget, and far less interesting than it should have been.
While the comics geek in me loved Lockjaw and having Attilan on the Moon (albeit with artificial Earth-level gravity and everyone knowing how to speak English), the rest of the show was massively disappointing, ponderous, and unable to truly inspire any sense of menace, tension, or, frankly, interest.
- Okay, Karnak and Gorgon were both pretty cool, esp. their interaction together. So, of course, they are immediately separated (and Karnak nerfed).
- Apparently the Medusa hair FX cost money, so we got to see her hair doing things, um, I think it was twice over two hours. Then the problem and need for FX was removed. Of course.
- Apparently a city full of Inhumans also is expensive, so they settled for a handful of facial prosthetics that were dubious when Star Trek TNG was in production, and minimal powers on display. Terragenesis is a lot quicker and easier amongst the Inhumans of Attilan than in their Agents of SHIELD Earthly brethren, but the results are a lot less interesting.
- Black Bolt was kind of cool in terms of watching him overcome his self-imposed silence. But it was still sort of gimmicky, and wore thin by the end.
- Crystal’s hair decor is black paint? (Shakes head sadly.)
- And, apparently, the whole series is about Maximus launching a coup and the Royal Family attempting to overthrow him back. Which might almost be interesting if we had any reason to give a fig about reestablishing the Royal Family, or thinking that Maximus (here a Poor Man’s Loki) were not as good a ruler as Black Bolt, or … whatever.
On the other hand, Lockjaw!
Who was pretty quickly nerfed out of the game.
Sigh.
Will we watch more? Well, I can’t quite bring myself to delete the show from the DVR recording queue, but I can’t say I’m eagerly (or even patiently) awaiting the next episode.
same director that ruined ironfist directed this as well..sad that the masses introduction to the inhumans is as lackluster as this…
Wow. It sounds like I didn't miss much. I had a bad feeling about Inhumans.
+Andrew Del Preore Strangely, I don't even see the connection. Iron Fist, for its flaws, was far more engaging, interesting, had more fascinating family dynamics, and far more sense of tension than this mess.
+Terence Towles Canote I don't know that I would tell someone not to watch it, but I wouldn't tell anyone they had to watch it right now.
Not getting good reviews.
I am hoping The Gifted is better. (The previews look better anyways…)
I am a huge Inhumans fan. Maximus' actor… ugh. Medusa… ugh… Crystal… ok. Karnak and Gorgon were cool. Black Bolt was also cool, I think he had good facial expressions.
I was thrown off by the sign language instead of telepathy but whatevers…
So disappointed.
THe Inhumans in Agents of SHIELD are so miuch better…
It put me to sleep the first time I watched it.
Are they going to be using the LOST sets?
But it kinda grew on me on the second attempt. But Karnak would never have fallen down a cliff face. Game of Thrones on the moon? Got to remember this is just intro and setup. We'll see where it goes from here: so I will still be watching.
+Matt Widmann The Gifted looks terribly plebeian — O HAI MY FAMILY HAS MUTANTS! — and not all that interesting to someone (or me) who has been reading X-comics for multiple decades.
On the other hand, it can't be more dull than Inhumans or more hackneyed than anything in CW's Berlantiverse.
+Runt Runt Good point that this is the set-up. But from a similar literary standpoint, they had not grabbed me by the end of the first chapter, let alone the first commercial break.
Do I recall that this was being broadcast / displayed in IMAX, too? I cannot imagine being so disappointed for something on so huge a screen (says the man who saw Watchmen and 300 in IMAX).
That sounds like a bog standard Inhumans plot. They should have done this bunch:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternals_(comics)
+Laura Ess Marvel has largely sidelined the Eternals, for better or worse. They were sort of an odd late Jack Kirby invention. Heck, they went so far as to get rid of the Celestials, though they've now gotten better.
The Inhumans at least should fit into things as they've been established in the MCU TV SHIELD-verse. Alas, there seems to be no concerted effort, beyond casual reference, to tie all that together.
+Dave Hill tbh i didn't find it as bad as predicted
the first episode made me a bit confused on the way things tuned out but it was still a good way to start off makes me want to watch more
I ran it through the same same Spock’s Brain filter I use for the Agents of Shield and it was meh ok. The fact that they even came close to the comics version was interesting.
@Marc – I find AoS a lot more interesting (just the characters, if nothing else). I do have to say that I enjoyed being geeky about things they did that were like the comics. One reason I am willing to forgive a large number of sins for whenever Lockjaw is on camera.
(It’s interesting that they chose to use hair coloration for Crystal’s hair, whereas it’s pretty clear in the comics that it’s some sort of Kirbyesque hair accessory.)
