So, yes, it turns out there will be a (sort of) Lord of the Rings TV show

So much prospect for awesomeness. Amazon should be able to do a good job of this.

Setting this in the Pre-LOTR story era has a lot of possibilities. I’m assuming a more anthological approach — there’s a lot of material in the canon that would make for some great stories, but it would be hard to make a continuous prequel narrative of it without causing purists (or, one presumes, the Tolkien Estate) some serious aesthetic grief.

I look forward to hearing more.

  1. I've been involved in a couple of discussions about this.

There are two distinct camps of opinion.
One is that they will use the Silmarillion as a source and it could be very cool.

The other is that it will use the well known tropes of elves, dwarves and orcs to make a relatively unconnected set of stories and it all be awful.

  2. +Melody Peters I don't see this as a Silmarillion TV series, and I'm not sure how successful that would be (a lot of those stories are grand epics that don't lend themselves to personalized storytelling).

Stories about the Rangers, stories in Ithilien, stories in Rhun or Far Harad, tales of Khazad-Dum … lots of possibilities there.

The real challenge will be avoiding making this the "Gotham" of LotR / Hobbit.

  3. Every once in a while it hits me, as a 60 yr old fan of sf and fantasy since my early teens, that this is an age undreamed of.

  4. It's important to note that this series "will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring," rather than re-tell the stories depicted onscreen in Peter Jackson's trilogy.

    So maybe no Tom Bombadil?
