The new Netflix “Lost in Space”

Good stuff. It’s not going to win any awards, but it’s smart, expensively done, and both definitely “Lost in Space” and definitely with lots of new twists.

They’re definitely playing a long game in introducing the backstory and the characters and their pre-existing relationships — but having watched the first ep, I’m definitely interested in more.

Reading some of the critical reviews, there’s a weird disconnect as to what the original show was about. They seem to remember only the camp Smith-Robot-Will goofiness, not remembering that the show started as a high-tech, straightforward survival adventure in the literal vein of the Swiss Family Robinson. The zaniness really only came out in the 2nd (color) and subsequent seasons, and, frankly, I never really cared for that stuff. I loved the adventure. I hated the comedy.

The reviews do (some of them) have the advantage of having gone through the full series, so some of the criticism may turn out to be more valid. But the first episode has me more than willing to go forward.

  1. +Dave Hill having watched the first few ep i think it's a good attempt of a remake. The plot holds together well and the characters are engaging and well acted on the whole with "Penny" being IMO the star. However the script writers really dropped the poor actress who landed Dr Smith with a shallow one dimensional nutjob character as if the change in gender was enough the carry the character. Overall B – i enjoyed the re-designed robot.

  2. The perils all seemed very contrived. The characters were bland, especially the long-lost-dad-who-conveniently-returns.

The TV Guide review by Matt Roush opens with "This disappointing reboot waits way too long to take flight." He mentions the "dreaded Netflix bloat," which kept me from finishing Daredevil or trying their other Marvel shows, saying that "hokey might be acceptable if it weren't all so poky," and that it was "a long slog to the climax, which ends where the series should have begun."

I couldn't see where it was going, with the Jupiter 2 apparently destroyed. This was Lost on a Planet, not in Lost in Space. And if Dr. Smith was there, I didn't see him/her. The first half hour was very disappointing.

  3. +Scott Randel The intro was certainly longer-paced than it seems like you wanted. Smith doesn't appear until the last quarter. The J2 does seem to be out of the picture for the moment. Yet I still enjoyed it enough, and the teases as to what's going on in the backstory (interpersonal and worldbuilding) to want more.
