Knife rights activists have been using the lessons the NRA has provided to weaken or eliminate state and federal laws against things like switchblades and ballistic knives.
Borrowing strategy from NRA, activists quietly overturn knife restrictions across U.S.
I've never owned or fired a gun. I have three knives within arm's reach right now that I could kill with. All kitchen knives. Same goes for most people on earth.
I can see sense in prohibiting the ballistic type; for the rest, only carriage in public is what needs to be regulated.
I've carried a pocketknife of some kind since I was eleven. For me, it's a useful and meaningful tool, indispensable for everyday applications, and reflective of my Southern, (former) Boy Scout, and maker cultures. There is literally not a day that goes by in which I do not use it.
Some places I've lived have no explicit rulings about knives, others limit them by blade length or type, a few ban carrying a knife of any kind. I've been stopped by police on occasion, sometimes for cause, sometimes to be harassed, but, regardless of law, no one has ever confiscated my pocketknife – again, that's probably cultural, with a large dose of white+well-spoken privilege.
Considering the wacky laws against knives in place like NYC, this is probably a good thing since most of them were race based anyways.
Everyone know how NYC is.. so I don't think it's bad or wanky law.
London has a knife ban, I don't think it's been helping them.
