The CDC says little kids are slathering too much toothpaste on their toothbrushes, which can lead to over fluoridation of their systems.
I mean, it's still probably better than not brushing, but, yeah, teach some moderation, parents.
Don’t let your kids do this ONE thing when brushing their teeth
I was raised by a single mother of three, so I use minimal toothpaste, dish soap, laundry detergent, etc. I can't abide the thought of waste.
Seems to me that one could also conclude that toothpaste is unsafe rather than concluding that kids use too much. This also makes me wonder more about the claims about fluoridated water.
We use kids toothpaste which has less fluoride. I agree though, this piece is alarmist.
+David Newman Mamy things are good in all doses while harmful in large. The health benefits of fluoridation and fluoride toothpaste are clear, but increasing water fluoridation a dozen times might have unwanted effects.
+Dave Hill Sure. My point is really about the reasoning. What is the criterion by which one judges that a product that may cause harm if used incorrectly provides enough benefit that it’s use should be encouraged in spite of the risks? In this case, children are notoriously bad at following directions. How does that change the balance between the harms and the benefits?
Admittedly, this is a tiny article from a news source that does not do in-depth reporting, so it’s unrealistic of me to expect more from them. Really. I should go look for the original report to see if it answers my question.
Fair enough question.
