Christmas seems like an odd holiday for the release of the Johnny Depp Sweeney Todd flick … but I’m sure we’ll figure out a way to go see it then. Probably without Kitten, though …
This was an odd phrase from the Variety article:
The hope is that “Sweeney” will be the sort of signature role for Depp that Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise was.
Depp has quite a few quirky, and quite good, roles behind him. The paragraph does make me think of the improbable (if there is a God) follow-up of sequels — say, Sweeney Todd – Dead Man’s Pate and Sweeney Todd – “…Two Bits!” (shudders)
Re casting, I actually worry less about Depp in the title role than Helen Bonham Carter as Mrs Lovett. Though I expect Alan Rickman will make a fine Judge Turpin …

Yes, personally I cannot wait to see Rickman as Judge Turpin. 🙂
P.S.
Ohhh….I LOVE the poster and the look of it.
I can’t hear the name “Sweeney Todd” without thinking of Angela Lansbury.
Oh, I agree. Hence the cognitive dissonance with HBC. We’ll see.
Having watched the first DVD….I just could not get “Murder She Wrote” and Randy’s EVIL version of Robin Hood out of my head.
She’s on the list with Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts, Renée Zellweger and Will Smith.
Sorry…
The Three Musketeers.
It is EVIL!
EVIL I tell you.
OMG — Vincent Price as Richelieu? Genius!
Lansbury has had an amazing career. Another young ingenue role of hers is in The Court Jester. Definitely worth seeing. And, of course, speaking of EVIL, there’s always The Manchurian Candidate.
Okay, she was very good at EVIL in The Manchurian Candidate, and probably the only movie that I liked her in.
No Dave, no…
First off it’s Prime Minister Richelieu…and no it was not good. You really have to have Randy loan it to you. It is like the Plan 9 From Outer Space version…only with more of a constant Train-Going-Off-a-Cliff-for-an-hour-and-half feel to it….less camp and more OMG! WTF! GAHHH! too it….and yet you can not turn away from it…its badness is hypnotic and you keep watching as the next horror unfolds.
Pure. Evil.
