Boys will be boys (and girls girls (and their toys … um, well …)

Are more girls than boys going to choose Barbies? Yeah, probably.

Are more boys than girls going to choose toy guns (do they still sell toy guns?)? Probably so.

So, then, why the concern if they aren't explicitly labeled as "boy toys" vs "girl toys"?

And if a girl wants some Marvel action figures, should she be discouraged from doing so by having a big "BOYS" sign? If a boy thinks My Little Ponies rock, should his friends (or their parents) skip over it as a gift because they are in the "GIRLS" aisle?

The point of this sort of thing isn't to erase whatever differences may actually be there. It's to not artificially impose those difference and let the power of the (if I may call it such) market let people of whatever gender find whatever gives them joy.

You know. Pursuing happiness.

I'm not sure why that's not a conservative value.

I expected there would be backlash. I didn't expect it would be this bizarre.

But thus, the point is proven again that Conservatives defend whatever happens to be the status quo, even if it's actually something new, over what is more traditional, and often times, beneficial. Gendered toys are a pretty recent phenomenon, promoted by toy companies so they could sell more stuff. Is there anything gendered about a hoolahoop or a squirt gun? There is if you put Frozen princesses or Iron Man on them–though even then, they're only gendered as a marketing contrivance. So if you want to protect the innocence of children, let them play with toys without forcing them into arbitrary marketing buckets.

Target Just Made INSANE Policy Change That has Liberals Cheering
The nuttiness of this is mind-blowing.

  1. The guy who wrote that article seems to be misinterpreting this whole area. They're not "shaming boys for wanting to play with toy six-shooters instead of My Little Pony dolls," they're preventing the shaming of girls who want to play with six-shooters and boys who want to play with My Little Pony toys."

And "gender-neutral toy aisles" do not "castrate" boys. Of course, if you're a blabbering nutter who thinks that sexual orientation is determined by the toys you played with as a child, you won't believe that.

  2. It's telling that the original article was on a self-styled "young" conservative site.

Old conservatives would say that a private company can do whatever it wants.

Young conservatives will probably introduce a "Mandatory Labeling for Anti-Emasculation" bill in Congress, creating a Federal mandate for gender-specific toys.
