Interesting pilot program in the UK here, where newly paved roads in the London area with speed limits below 30mph are not getting lanes repainted. The result has been a significant reduction in driver speed.
I can understand how, lacking lines, drivers would be paying more attention (and driving more slowly), but it still feels sort of counter-intuitive. Though this isn't an uncommon thing for neighborhood streets, at least in the suburbs I've lived in.
