I bought (and still own) both Alan Dean Foster's ghost written novelization of A New Hope (well, called just Star Wars, then)[1] and his credited sequel novel, Splinter of the Mind's Eye. What I had never realized was that (based on this article/video), the latter was actually a novelization for a sequel movie to be made if the original film tanked.

It's been decades since I read it. Do I dare?[2]
The very cool paperback cover, below, was actually drawn by Ralph McQuarrie, who did all the original concept art for Star Wars.

[1] The SW novelization, attributed to George Lucas, was based on earlier versions of the script, which makes for a bit of cognitive dissonance — e.g., the Emperor dissolves the Senate, leaving the warlord sector governors / Moffs in charge, not because he's an evil tyrant (let alone a Sith), but because he's weak and is forced into it by those same governors.
SotME is full of other stuff of dubious canonical value even pre-Disney — including running with the whole "Luke and Leah are romantically involved" storyline that Lucas dropped by the next (actualized) movie.
[2] Alan Dean Foster was (in)famous as a movie/TV adaptation novelist. He wrote novelizations of all the Star Trek animated series, among other things. He's not a bad writer, all told — not brilliant, but quite readable.

I read that. Had no idea it was meant to be a sequel.
Me too
+Marty S. Nor did I until I read this article, though I've seen that confirmed a few places I dug into.
