So we actually stopped by the Lone Tree “Nothing Bundt Cakes” this afternoon whilst out on errands. Since we originally spotted it, it’s been open for a few weeks — but we never got to it during the week, or on any given Saturday, and they’re closed on Sunday, so …

… and, of course, today was their Grand Opening, so the place was pretty packed. But that’s okay.

So the basic idea of the NBC business and product is —

  1. Three sizes (single serving, 8″, 10″) of bundt cake …
  2. … of a dozen different flavors (two basics of the larger sizes are always in stock; the others take a few hours to bake to order) …
  3. … topped with an excellent cream cheese frosting …
  4. … and (optionally) decorated with one of many different silk flower and other standardized decorative kits for different occasions (see picture) …
  5. … and further accented with recommendations for color-coordinated balloons and other tchochkes.

It’s a very clever way to do things, allowing a great deal of variety but quite manageable for the store to handle.

Or, of course, you can just go in and buy a bundt cake without any of the goodies. And, if the samples they were giving out are any indication, the cake is excellent, as is the frosting (as noted). The prices aren’t cheap, but the product is good. (We’ll know more when we try some of the singletons we got before).

The shop itself is polished and pleasant, as much a neatly designed nostalgia/gift shop as a bakery. The whole environment is carefully managed — homey and welcoming in an artificial but not offputting way. This is the tenth franchisee of the NBC business, with three “corporate” shops as well, all scattered about the West. The people there were friendly and helpful, even amongst the crowds (and tempermental credit card connections). I also had the pleasant opportunity to meet Dea, the franchise owner and commenter on my previous blog entry.

Anyway, enjoyed dropping in, look forward to enjoying our cakes tonight, and I hope Dea and the shop are successful in this difficult business climate (and at their visible-but-out-the-way location — though being next door to Chuck E. Cheese might be of some advantage).

Good eats!

  1. For the record, the lemon, chocolate-chocolate-chip, and red velvet bundtlettes were quite tasty, very moist cake, and (as previously noted) a good cream cheese frosting (and plenty of it). Yum.
