Ladies and Gentlemen, Our President, offering to "destroy" the career of a Texas state senator doing something he doesn't like.
'During the meeting, Trump went around the room asking the sheriffs to air top concerns. "There's a state senator in Texas that was talking about legislation to require conviction before we could receive that forfeiture money," [Rockwall County Sheriff Harold] Eavenson told the president.
"Can you believe that?" Trump said.
"And I told him that the cartel would build a monument to him in Mexico if he could get that legislation passed," Eavenson said.
"Who is the state senator? Do you want to give his name? We'll destroy his career," Trump said, prompting laughter.'
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that a group of sheriffs would be steadfast behind the idea of confiscating money for their own departments without due process. I'm trying to decide if it's more reprehensible that the President offered casually to destroy the career of an elected state official, or that the assembled sheriffs thought that was an amusing thing for him to say.
Oh, yes, I'm sure that officially everyone thought it was a joke. Because joking about that sort of thing is vastly more acceptable than actually doing it. And nobody thinks that Donald Trump would be vindictive or petty enough to go after someone he doesn't like, right? I mean, when has the President ever publicly attacked the actions or character of anyone to whom he took a dislike?
The various state senators in Texas who have been involved in fighting asset forfeiture laws (Eavenson never mentioned a name to Trump, nor is he willing now to do provide the name he was thinking of) are all sort of laughing it off. Hopefully it was just casually vicious bluster on Our President's part.
