  1. I have not yet had the sublime pleasure of listening to someone’s lawn mower at 7 am. But last night, some new neighbors moved in. And about the first sound out of them was the father spanking his son. The kid started crying and I suddenly realized that my happy days of near monastic silence in my home are probably at an abrupt end.

    1. Wow … that’s … unfortunate.

I mean, I expect to hear sounds from neighborhood kids (at reasonable hours; my bounds for “reasonable” are sometimes, but not too frequently, tighter than some neighboring parents).

But it’s unfortunate that the first sound was a spanking, or that (assuming here, from my own experience) the father let his own fatigue and stress over the moving experience interact poorly with that of his son.

        1. As a parent (though my daughter is now past spanking age), I know that often corporal punishment is driven by more than just a cool, objective view of the situation. I did not regularly spank my daughter by any means, but the temptation to do so was often driven as much by my own frustration as by pedagogy.
