On a college pep band trip (1986 WAC basketball tournament in Albuquerque, NM, IIRC) we witnessed (from inside the plane) our instruments cases being angrily thrown onto the conveyor belt by an obviously unhappy airline employee. I am extremely reluctant to ever check a valuable and fragile item with an airline, because somewhere along the line it is going to be handled by a person who just doesn't give a damn.
