So it must be time for the Thursday Thumb-Twiddler
1. Does not having done something before make it more appealing, or less?
I am a creature of habit. That’s because I’m lazy, and following in a rut means less decision-making, and thus less work. So, usually, I’m more inclined to do something I’ve done before (and enjoyed) than something I’ve not done before (but might enjoy).
I do sometimes show bursts of novelty-loving, but only when it’s new-stuff-sorta-like-old-stuff-I-liked.
2. If you could have a large stain-glass window in your house, what would you want it to depict?
We actually, I believe, have a really pretty stained glass panel down in the basement. It’s been packed up in a heavy wooden container since I’ve known Margie, since it got “some damage” somewhere along the line. One of these days …
If I was making up something new, it would probably be a floral pattern — maybe lots of fines, with a bright flower or cluster of them in the middle.
Stained glass work is one of those things that is On My List of Hobbies To Pursue in Another Lifetime.
Alas, our current house does not have many good windows for stained glass. A few, but not many.
3. A change of pace. What five TV series have or had the best instrumental theme song?
It’s hard to divorce the music from the visuals (let alone from the show), but my vote (today) would be:
1. Mission: Impossible (TOS)
2. Jonny Quest (TOS)
3. Magnum, PI
4. Space Ghost (TOS)
5. Simon & Simon (S2ff.)
With Honorable Mention to The Equalizer, Hawaii 5-0, Peter Gunn, Miami Vice, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Thunderbirds, Barnaby Jones, Buffy, Angel, Hill Street Blues, all of the WB recent super-hero cartoons, Babylon 5 (particularly S5), The A-Team, most of the modern Star Trek franchises (except the current one, and the revamped DS9 “dance mix”), Space: Above & Beyond, and Masterpiece Theater.
What??? No mention of Perry Mason, possibly the most dramatic TV theme ever? I also liked the themes from Battlestar Galactica, Quantum Leap, Ellery Queen, Nero Wolfe (1981), Murder, She Wrote, and The Hardy Boys.
whew
I thought about Perry. It should certainly be mentioned. Galactica was definitely good. Ellery Queen — yeah, that’s good. And, yes, the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries had a good theme song (and main title).
Never much cared for the QL theme, frankly, or Murder, She Wrote. And I never watched the ’81 Wolfe series (to my regret, though I’ve been told I didn’t miss much).
The old Wolfe series was certainly worth missing, although it did compel me to finally start reading the books. The theme was by John Addison. I was hoping he’d win an Emmy, but he had to wait another year (when he would win for Murder, She Wrote).
Do you remember comparing our cassette recordings of the Hardy Boys theme? as I recall, we couldn’t synch them, probably because my 1st-season tape had been recorded over, and the 2nd-season theme was slightly different.
Boy, we had a lot of spare time back then!
