Didn’t we just go through a paper money redesign? Is anyone else annoyed that, after changing the $20 just five years ago, they’re looking to do it again? The secret, this time, is that there will be a non-green “predominant but subtle color” color in the background.

Ooooh, that’ll keep those counterfeiters at bay.

Okay, so counterfeiting is, in fact, a major industry. And all those memes of elderly guys with jewellers loups making their own fake $20 plates have gone the way of digital photography and overlaying images on bleached lower-denomination bills.

But, jeez, isn’t there something we can do besides reshuffle the deck every five years?

  1. Dave we are the only “Major” country that does not do this, thus we are the biggest target of counterfeiting. I’ve seen estimates that up to 70% of U.S. bill outside of the U.S. are fake.

Current tech can not deal with widely varied two and three color schemes that have the ability to foil scanners.

Most countries redo their currency ever four to five years.

  2. Maybe if I was expecting the change, it would be fine. Announcing that we’re going into five year cycles of redesigning our currency would raise no objections from me.

Of course, then we have to deal with all the competing interests as to who and what goes on different bills.

  3. When the Euro’s were done, the powers that are took great pains to make sure nothing on thebills could be tied to, or look like anything from any country.

Prior to that, in most of the countries, the items and people on the bill’s didn’t change all that often. Only if sombody fell out of favor, or Commemorative issues.

The designs, colors, pattern, and watermarks all changed to keep ahead of the counterfitters. Moire-ing the image also messes up Scanners. They can’t deal with all of the lines and they do odd things.

Plus by doing it the way congress is doing it allows the congree-critters to bollocks up the works…
