Hooray for New(er) Math!

Huh. Guess I missed the memo that there was some Huge Controversy over Subtraction making the rounds.

All I can say is:

1. My daughter got taught math in the past several years in some strange, bizarre ways that (a) allowed her to graduate to "normal" computation and (b) don't seem to have rendered her an idiot.

2. I was entering 3rd Grade in the 60s right when our school traded in the old clay tablets math books that taught "old math" (pages and pages of rote computation) in favor of "New Math" books (this was the first coming of New Math).  I seem to have survived as well (and there were elements of New Math I really enjoyed).

I only learned the "old" way. The new way makes perfect sense to me. Not sure what folks are complaining about.
