I mean, really — we start with debates over whether folk should get vaccinated over diseases that "aren't so bad," and then graduate to discussions about voluntary hand washing for food handlers? Are we really turning back the clock on a century and more of public health and safety regulations? What next, the "Freedom" of Open Sewers?
'One of the things that I don’t understand about people who say that the government is overreaching when it comes to health regulations is that those regulations didn’t come out of a vacuum. They didn’t come out of a socialist’s mind with an aim to destroy the free market. They came out of epidemiological work that tells us very clearly and with a lot of evidence that infectious diseases are passed on by people when they fail to do certain things.'
Sometimes these arguments come across like a parent telling a four year old they need to do something, and getting a stubborn "Nuh-uh, you can't make me!" Which is cute, until you get some major disease outbreaks and people die.
When politics trumps science and common sense
As I sit down to write this, I wonder how this blog and this blog post will affect any political future I may have. Then I remember that my aim is not to be a politician. Yes, I’ll try to influence…
