  1. Dave, have you read “The Pattern on the Stone,” by Daniel Hillis? It’s great. Hillis basically designed the first massively parallel computer, and he’s a really interesting character. In this book he describes the very fundamentals of how computers work in a very interesting way, even if you know a lot about computers. I highly recommend it.

  2. Good gravy, I was going to recommend “Pattern on the Stone” as well! I give that one to non-technical folks who ask me “How does a computer work?”.

    It’s an excellent work, very brief, but covers (I think) all the basics. Exellent writing. I wish Hillis would do more along these lines.
