I was an early Mac user, and we still have a (very) old one lurking around the house. There’s a lot to like about Macs, and about Apple — but, sometimes, it sure seems like the Cult of Apple leads to just this sort of thing.

  1. Gee Dave, are you trying to yank my chain?

There are people who are extreme in their love for Apple. They don’t get any street cred for being different unless they publicize the fact that they are different, so they are fairly vocal. I’m sure Apple encourages that sort of rabid enthusiasm, since it’s free publicity and it can’t hurt to have a group of people who will buy everything that you make.

But haven’t you noticed people who are equally enthusiastic about other products? I know I noticed a similar attitude among the Linux geeks at the height of it’s popularity, and I’d be willing to compare the hardcore Apple geeks to Deadheads, Star-Wars fans, or Aibo owners. I’d say the only unique thing about Apple-enthusiasm is the degree to which it’s been an enduring phenomenon over an extended period of time.

  2. Oh, certainly there are other fan[atics] of different products out there . Trekkies, TiVo afficionados, etc. Apple fans are certainly far from the only folks of that sort. I just thought this was a particularly amusing send-up. 🙂

  3. Indeed. That’s the same reason I thought it was funny when I came across it. In fact, it borders on being an accurate description of me and Mac products. Although I have no plans on buying an iPod shuffle, the Mac mini looks like the perfect opportunity to replace a couple of aging Macs in my lab… 😉
