Watching Katherine’s reaction to Kaylee’s birth has been interesting.
On the one hand, she’s fascinated by Kaylee. She wants to see her. She wants to touch her. She kind of likes the idea of being her “de facto big sister.” She thinks Kaylee (and the rest of the Testerclan) are all pretty darned neat.
On the other hand, there are distinct signs of “Waaah! I’m not the cutest little girl in the room any more!” When we visit, Katherine is torn between wanting to go over and see the baby, and wanting to be held like a baby. She struggles (distinctly, though not impolitely) to be the center of attention, even more than usual. That all the adults are (a) chitchatting about non-Katherine topics and (b) paying a lot of attention to the baby does not escape her.
A certain amount of jealousy is understandable, and Katherine, fortunately, has other things on her mind at the moment, too, like starting Kindergarten today. It’s just been (and doubtless will be) sort of fascinating watching her deal with the new social dynamic. We’ll be giving her some extra love and attention in the coming days, just to let he know that she’s still the cutest girl in our hearts.
