It’s pronounced … Tay-los? Yikes.
Evidently in the new I9 Inventions Tutorial video, the narrator pronounces Talos (as in the hero and, more importantly, the island named after him) as “Tay-los” — as opposed to “Tah-los” (like in “talon”) or even, for the Hungarians among you, “Tah-losh.”
After folks giggled over that on the boards … quoth Positron:
The video pronounces it right. I had to have Statesman (Jack) confirm it himself specifically for this vid.
And it don’t get much more definitive than Posi quoting States.

As a resident of New Orleans, I know it doesn’t matter how Jack wants us to say it, how it’s supposed to be said or even if the pronounciation matches the spelling in any realistic way. If the people pronounce it one way, that’s the way it is.
Examples from my neck of the woods:
Street names:
Burgundy – bur-GUN-dy
Calliope – KAL-ee-ope
Melpomone – MEL-po-mean
Tchopitoulas – CHOP-uh-tool-us (this is actually correct, but I like it)
Cities:
Gautier – GO-shay (MS)
Carriere – kar-REAR (MS)
Des Allemands – dez-ALL-mundz (LA)
And I could go on and on.
So screw it – it’s TA-los. TAY-los just sounds dumb.
Yeah, but you have all that weird French/Acadian influence — I’d expect your pronunciations to be all weird. 🙂
Well, heck, it’s like Worcestershire Sauce, or Gloucester (“Gloster”) … or “Nawlins” for that matter.
Here in Denver we have Zuni Street. Everyone else in the world pronounces it “Zoo-nee.” This street, though, is pronounced “Zoo-nigh.”
Makes no diff, I suppose, unless you’re writing CoX poetry (shudder). Very few of us ever actually say the words to anyone outside of a local circle of friends at most, so I doubt there will be “Talos Wars” over the “right” way to say it.
