Once upon a time, a small band of weary travelers happened upon a beautiful valley – King’s Canyon – in search of one of their fellow members – a girl with golden locks and a ready smile. She had been abducted by a gang of women called Girl Scouts, and than taken to this remote forest site. The travelers were successful in rescuing the girl but they were enchanted by the forest setting and decided to return the following year with their own gang of Boy Scouts. And thus our epic begins.
The following year in June of 1983, the party group decided to make this meeting in the forest a “non-scout” event to accommodate their desire for gourmet food, libations and pursuit of pleasure. (“I would like brandy in my coffee”) The group was called “KOA“ – Kleerup Organized Activity.
Soon, many others joined the fold . Over the years their numbers increased and they created new members. They would gather once a year on the last four day weekend (Friday-Monday) in June to celebrate good friends and good food (and drink). Being of the nomadic inclination the group moved from Kings Canyon to other sites – Quaking Aspen, Lake Casitas, and Lake San Antonio. A broken hydro-electric plant and the drought moved us San Diego County. And so the journey continues.
