Links that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries …
- Gmail overtakes YouTube as 10th most visited US site – Ars Technica – Cool.
- Facebook does right thing, listens to disgruntled feedback – Ars Technica – My Facebook usage is fairly minimal, but I actually liked the redesign, just because I felt I could find things more easily.
- Parents fight child porn threats against “sexting” teens – I would be seriously torqued off to discover (in her teen future) that my daughter had done something like this. I would be even more torqued off, though, to have her blackmailed by the school district with the bizarro charge of distributing “child pornography” of herself. Right, teach ’em a lesson by getting them put onto a sex offenders registry *for life*.
- 18 Sci-Fi Twitter Feeds You Should Be Following – Wait — instead of GReader Sharing should I be Twittering about this article that is a Blog entry about sci-fi Twitter feeds? I’m so confused!
- O’Reilly Lashes Back At ThinkProgress: ‘They’re Insects’ – Yeah, there’s “desperation” in the air — but it’s thickest over at O’Reilly’s place. The guy’s a nasty, malicious toad.
- Why Was a Public School Choir Going to Sing This Song? – I’m not sure if these folks simply don’t realize what they’re doing, or if they are intentionally provoking a conflict — but this song was wildly inappropriate for a public school concert, and dragging kids into the debate is reprehensible.
- Ken Ham’s Hypocritical Whining – I’m not particularly fond of ambush interviews and media turning of interviews into surprise “debates.” Smacks too much of daytime TV. On the other hand, I particularly dislike hypocrites, especially when they’re doing it in the name of God.
- FTC: We’ll “come calling” about deceptive DRM – Long overdue and it’s good to see the FTC being as fair minded about it.
- Infrastructure and bridges, Depression edition [Effect Measure] – Ah, yes, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge — this newsreel film gave me nightmares as a kid.
- Boxed Water: It’s What’s for Drinking [Packaging] – While I understand that bottled water often tastes better than tap, there are still much better and energy-saving ways to find good water to drink.
- Dan Meth’s Trilogy Meter: Pablo Defendini
- Parvez Ahmed: Eric Holder Must End FBI’s Abuses Against American Muslims: Parvez Ahmed
- Design Revolution: How Manufacturers Could Reduce Costs By Simply Designing For Reliability – Designing for Reliability can reduce manufacturers’ costs by simplifying warranties and reducing warranty service and returns (not to mention making for happier repeat customers)? What sort of commiesymp liberal socialist group is this “Six Sigma” organization, anyway? The AFA demands a boycott!
- Twitter and media quickitude – Sadly, most Tweets I read are vastly more informative than local news “film at eleven” promos are. This is, without a doubt, one of those things that when I am appointed Emperor of the World and wear a shiny hat, I will fix with brutal and bloody determination.
- How did we get to this point? [Pharyngula] – We got to this point by too many people being scared and insecure, and too many others willing to exploit those fears.
- A heartless faith [Pharyngula] – “I don’t want to turn this tragic event into some creepy spiritual ‘I told you so’ moment” … and then the heartless “faithful” does. Nice way to provide proof to those looking for it, Gingi, that Christians are heartless assholes more interested in self-righteous fingerpointing than in compassion. Is that really what you think Jesus would have done?
- What one word tips you off that the writer is an idiot? [Dr. Joan Bushwell’s Chimpanzee Refuge] – Next time I hear someone bitching about how “the homosexuals” have coopted the word “gay,” I’ll note how the anti-homosexuals have coopted the word “agenda.”
- Is it Slutty, or is it Fun? – As far as I’m concerned, show you’re making some effort, but if it doesn’t look like you’re having fun, it’s a turn-off for those around you, too.
- Doctors Heed Obama’s Call, Take Digital Plunge – I am fortunate in that Kaiser in Colorado has been on wholly electronic records for years. It makes it hugely easy to go between docs, or clinics, and have your record move with you. The KP system here has been touted by the Obama Administration as an example of what can be done.
