Links that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries …
- Demon Denim: George Will is an American Hero. « TwoBlueDay – What’s remarkable is that the original WSJ article that Will lionizes with an apparently straight face and self-righteous dudgeon, is itself relatively light-hearted — more wistful than Will’s disdainful elitism. Feh.
- The scientifically unexplained – Though I’ll note that it’s stuff that science cannot currently explain. Or, as the article headline puts it, “stuff that doesn’t make sense.” But what’s really cool here is that scientists continue to study this stuff, not simply dismissing results that don’t fit their worldview. That’s the strength of the scientific method, for all that it’s implemented by flawed humans.
- Rachel takes down my crap GOP senator Richard Burr – Wow. I like Rachel Maddow.
- Massively webcomic: Grinders – The Nyangnyang Dilemma – I felt I should go ahead and post this before one of my “friends” did.
- Syndicated Columnist Takes a Cheap Shot at Gamers – Yes, George Will is Andy Rooney with pretensions to intellectualism. Yet, he, too, is still allowed to vote.
- TWC Delays Metered Broadband Test So They Can “Educate” A “Vocal Minority” [Metered Broadband] – What TWC misses is that while one can make a caes for metered broadband (as with any other metered utility), if you are a monopoly in providing service, then your metering had better be damned cheap, or, yes, people are going to be pissed off when their bills suddenly skyrocket. That piece of “education” has to fall in place, too.
- Sonoma XP – I’ve driven past this, too, though it’s been many years.
- They’re gone! After outcry, Time Warner uncaps the tubes – Ars Technica – Yup, textbook case of overreach. Though I’m amused (and/or infuriated by TWC saying that they’re just suspending this “while the customer education process continues”).
- The wages of the FISA compromise: more unauthorized wiretaps – Ars Technica – People frequently argue that reducing the age for alcohol consumption will cause the age for “cheaters” to drop still further. But they don’t seem to see the same thing is true for privacy protection — reduce the standards, and the inevitable violations, scope creep, and cheating will become even more egregious.
- Think Progress » Rep. Peter King Responds To Extremism Report, Says DHS Should Be Targeting ‘Mosques’ Instead – Idiot Alert. Idiot Alert.
- Daily Kos: Twitter + Stimulus = Conservative Stupidity – File under “Trust But Verify.” And, to be fair, I think you could have found folks on the Left being equally gullible about something the Bush Administration was doing.
- “Tax Tea Party Time” – Money graf: “People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. That only comes from having credibility gained by the correct presentation of facts and analysis and a willingness to be even-handed–criticizing one’s own side when it is wrong and not only speaking up when the other party does the same thing.”
- Steampunk Segway: the Legway – Ha!
- Our “Missing” Chromosomes – Meant to share this yesterday — this is some incredibly cool science, both for itself and as yet another piece in the evolutionary picture.
- DeLay defends Gov. Perry, explains how Texas could secede from the Union. – Yeah, let’s remember all this next time the Right is critiquing the Left for “hating America” and treason.
- Expensive Mint Juleps – Alas, I don’t care for bourbon. Think if I brought some good rum, they would mix me a nice Mojito?
- What’s Your Zombie Contingency Plan? 11 Practical Strategies – Words to live by.
- Congress Bails Out the Superrich – I’m shocked, shocked to discover that the incredibly wealthy members of Congress (of both parties) are eager to further slash estate taxes.
- Want To Save Your Favorite TV Show?: Stop watching it on television. | The Big Money – Something to consider.
- #navysealsgo! | Nick Harkaway – I LOLed.
