Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE – Alas, there are too many people who would stone one or both of them for compromising their beliefs by treating one another as humans.
- Firedoglake » GOP Favors Public Option for Property, Not People – Excellent observation: the GOP favors mandatory property insurance in known flood areas … with a robust public option for those denied coverage. So why is Trent Lott’s Mississippi house more worth of government protection than the lives of my family?
- Show Gmail Labels with Unread Messages – Ah. This would be extremely valuable if I actually opened lal of my email.
- 15 Useful Tools for WordPress Bloggers – Some good tool suggestions here, too. Noting for future reference and research.
- 10 Excellent and Free Blog Editors for the Desktop – Hmmm. Noting these for such time as Linear stops working for me (or I’m bored and want to play with something new).
- Grace Mugabe, her ’stolen’ farm and how she supplies Zimbabwean milk to Nestle food giant – Nice. Nestle basically says, “It’s not really us buying from her, it’s a named subsidiary. And it’s from unmarked trucks from the dairy estate she has her first son operating, and besides it’s not contractual but cash on delivery … so … we’re legal, right?”
- Kent Conrad claims U.S. doesn’t need a public option because France doesn’t have one. – Okay — I guess that means we should go ahead and adopt a system like France’s. Sold.
- Rove Says ‘Obama Doesn’t Need More TV Time,’ But He Argued Bush ‘Needed To Be Out Speaking Every Day’ – “Overexposure for me, but not for thee.”
- Ensign: Tenthers Who ‘Hold The Constitution Pretty High In Their Lives’ Should Be Able To Ignore Health Mandate – Dude, when Antonin Scalia of all people says your interpretation of the Constitution is whacked, you might want to reconsider … assuming you’re actually making serious arguments, not just playing to the crowds.
- Inhofe on why global warming isn’t real: ‘God’s still up there. We’re going through these cycles.’ – Global Warming is a hoax because God will take care of it? Um … shall we get into a debate about the Problem of Evil, Senator Inhofe?
- Insurer Denies Woman’s Claim: She Should Have Known That Her Bleeding Breast Was Not An ‘Emergency’ – For-profit health care means someone making money trumps someone getting health care. It’s really that simple. Worse, not only do you end up with folks getting denied coverage for treatment that was (or was believed to be) critical, but you end up with a “chilling effect,” where the assumption is that insurance companies will deny coverage, so folks delay treatment. Which, of course, leads to death, but, hey, that doesn’t impact Aetna’s quarterly earnings statement, so who cares?
- Children sang Bush’s praises, but conservatives now call such behavior ‘indoctrination,’ ‘propaganda.’: Faiz Shakir
- Danger Patrol: Zombie Kong and Plan 8 from Planet X – OMG. I WANT.
- The Daily Grind: Should all games have fast travel? – Yes. Yes they should.
- Wrongly held at Gitmo for seven years an innocent man is about to be set free. – This is PRECISELY why due process is not some casual luxury that we should allow when it’s convenient. This could be an American citizen. For all we know, there are American citizens in a similar situation. And certainly if another country treated one of ours this way, we’d be baying to the moon to call in missile strikes and extraction teams. That the Bush Administration sought to normalize such treatment is an indelible blot on our nation’s reputation and soul.
- Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Burqini – I don’t have any objection to providing options to those who don’t want to show skin. I object to condemnation of those choose otherwise, or who seek to impose their skin-phobia on others. Plus, it’s worth noting that wearing an outfit like this in some cultures and countries would still get you stoned.
- If Air Travel Worked Like Health Care – National Journal Magazine – Amusing and interesting — but not so much analogous to the health insurance debacle going on, but a combination of (a) lack of unified group practices (e.g., the Kaiser model), (b) a profit-based system that acts as a profit-added tax to every step of the system, and (c) customer paranoia (justified or not) about their medical records (somewhat justified to the extent that insurers — and insurer-hounded employers — are inclined to drop anyone like a hot potato who actually uses medical services).
