- The Sequel Question – Some interesting thoughts on sequels. I’d add, as a variant to the first question, “Is the main character going to have an even bigger problem as in the first book.” The need to trump last book’s crisis (and amplify the abilities of the protagonist to deal with it) often makes follow-ups increasingly absurd (see Laurell K Hamilton). After all, if in the first book the protagonist faces The Most Awful Gnorch Of All, discovering that in the next book the protagonist faces The Thing So Awful Even Gnorches Fear It, then in the next book The Thing That Eats Those Previous Things For Breakfast And Doesn’t Even Bother With Gnorches Because They’re Too Trivial … it all starts to feel silly (and debases the threat of the original story to boot).
