Human Rights Are Human Rights

I applaud the effort by the White House to include gay rights as human rights that the US will strive to protect internationally.

I'm sure it will draw frothing vitriol from the Religious Right, because criminalization and legal discrimination of gays is part of their national and international agenda, but … well, tough noogies. #ddtb

  1. I admit that announcement came out of the blue for me, but I’m glad it was made.
And then, Friday, PropH8 was overturned. We expect it to go to SCOTUS, and hope it will not only stay overturned but set a legal precedent that will change laws like mad.

    Speaking of mahwwidge,

All unable to marry. Yeah, sanctity of marriage my bodypart, you righteous idiots.

    1. @Marina – Actually 8 was not overturned; there was some weirdly viral social babble yesterday that was pointing to a 2010 story. The Ninth Circuit finished hearing testimony on Thursday, primarily on whether Walker should have recused himself (of course not) and whether court recordings should be made public (I believe so). They’ll be ruling “soon”, but, it hasn’t happened yet, and it will certainly be appealed to SCOTUS. I would expect SCOTUS to support the overturn, based on precedent — unfortunately, I have no faith that they will do so based on the zany conservative hijinks of too many of the members.

    2. And, yes, it seems to me that supporters of “real, Biblical marriage” (assuming we’re not talking about Old Testament style marriage) would do much more useful work for the institution targeting celebrities than gays.

  2. Crud. I did wonder why there wasn’t more news coverage.

But I do agree that those supporters of “real, Biblical marriage” ought to be after celebrities instead. I suppose all those intervening years of changes in customs and laws would be right out, then.
