Targeting GoDaddy

Because they stood out, were an easy target, and were already pretty much disliked. Versus trying to find an alternative to watching movies from Paramount or not buying software from Microsoft.

Which isn't to say that moving your domain registration (and hosting, if you have it there) from GoDaddy isn't a good idea, for a host of reasons. But it's hardly the death knell for SOPA. #ddtb

SOPA: GoDaddy Was an Easy Target | K-Squared Ramblings
When people found out that GoDaddy supported SOPA, they organized a boycott and got them to change course. But why the focus on them and not the other ~150 companies on the list?

  1. And certainly not the death knell for GoDaddy. Even if you accept the worst case scenario that the new registrations on December 29 actually resulted from transfers of lapsed registrations, the adverse impact on GoDaddy was minimal, if there was any adverse effect.

  2. Honestly I've been getting tired of GoDaddy for a long time. Their utility pages are obnoxious, their "GoDaddy Girls" exploitive, and Bob Parsons putting his face and personality all over the place just got really old. SOPA was just the last straw.

  3. I was reading on CBR how Marvel (and their parent company, Disney), as well as D.C. (and Time Warner) comics are also in support of SOPA.

I'm curious to see if the fanboys get riled up enough to boycott them, too.

  4. I feel much the same, +George Wiman … I particularly resented the minefield of renewal screens where the "No, I just want to renew my damned domain registration" link always seemed hidden under various upselling links.

But that's kind of the point of the article — GoDaddy's been engendering resentment among a lot of people for a long time, and this last contretemps was sort of the last straw.
