Because if I go into your house and take all your stuff, that's theft, and if I confess to it then the police will lock me up in jail. But if a bank makes a goofy mistake and forecloses on your house and empties it of your goods and trashes or sells them off while you're away on vacation — well, them's the breaks, kid — we'll tell you how much we think it was all worth, and, of course, no charges will be filed against anyone because the free market will correct it, no doubt.
