Compaq has had to recall and replaces a whole bunch (1.4 million) of laptop power supplies (bricks), since a few of them have, ah, burst into flames. I just got one of the new ones today, which is good, and it’s actually smaller than the old one, which is great, but …

… it doesn’t have an LED on it, showing when it’s plugged into a live power source.

Which means if you have a little toddler at home who thinks that turning off the surge suppressor is fun, you may not know it until your battery dies.

Or if you’re sitting in an airport, and plug into a wall outlet that’s actually shut off … ditto.

Both of which are, of course, real-life examples.

But at least it won’t burst into flames.
