Of course, Jimmy Carter, himself a nuclear engineer aboard a sub, used to say the same thing. And it bugged the hell out of me then, too.

I remember it grated on me like badly stored cheese when I heard it uttered in “Crimson Tide,” too.
Yeah, well I’m willing to give Ike a little slack. “Nucular” stuff was still pretty new at the time. No excuse for Carter, nor for Dubya.
I can handle the “Nucular” bit… It’s the terrah pronunciation that drives me buggy.
