My laptop has once again joined the ranks of the living dead, sitting there menacingly on my table and moaning about Invalid Boot Sectors. So I’ll be only spottily on the air over the next few days (until I’m at home on Friday). Feh.
On the other hand, it will force the move to XP. And my backups are really pretty fresh this time around.

I think the title line should have ‘horrible’ twice, in succession.
Work has provided me with a laptop that is, at least partially, mine in exclusion. In practice, I intend to make it very annoying for anyone else to use the thing.
I’m not in love with IBM thinkpads, but it has a nice crisp (one might even say “barely used by the not-so-tech-savvy other trainer”) keyboard and a nice big display (bigger than the useful display on the provided desktop, actually), and even a little docking station to leave at work and make my life easier. If there were only two power supplies — one for travel and one for work, I’d be very pleased.
But it does do this annoying head clicking thing when it’s idle that fills me with a certain amount of dread…. mostly because of what you yourself are dealing with right now.

IBM Thinkpads are the finest protable machines available.
We may very well end up with those as our new standard. Of course, our company has decided that the hardward side of computers is a commodity, and so while they are willing to go with a single provider, they aren’t doing any sort of actual product comparison, just comparisons on price, services, etc. Idiots.
We had some serious flakiness some years back with the IBM notebooks with the expanding keyboards. Very flaky. Dunno how they’re doing these days. I’ve been happy with our Compaq Armadas, to be honest.
