A new survey out finds that rudeness is getting worse in the US.
The question is: what to do about it?
Confront?
Ignore?
Withdraw?
“Teach your children well”?
Try to dig out the root causes and correct them?
Is the problem any more tractable than the Middle East issue?
Being a most diplomatic of souls, always concerned about giving offense (and handling it really clumsily when I intend to), rudeness is something that really bugs the bejeebers out of me, if you’ll pardon the expression.
Teach your children (my 2 year old never fails to say “thank you”…”please” is still an issue though), lead by example and call offenders on their behavior. This P.C. culture has got to end…we cannot just ignore things and hope they’ll get better.
When someone fails to hold a door for me, I thank them in a very loud voice. When someone does hold a door for me, I thank them and give them my best smile. Hopefully it makes some small difference.
